McCormack wins his second NZ Grand Prix

John McCormack (Australia) won the 100-mile New Zealand Grand Prix at Wigram in his three-year-old Elfin MR5 Repco V8, taking the Lady Wigram Trophy round of the Stuyvesant Tasman series for the second time after his 1973 Pukekohe win. Belgian Teddy Pilette and Englishman Peter Gethin (both Chevron B24) were delayed by tyre stops and finished second and third, while Gethin set a new circuit lap record. Ray Archibald's C type Jaguar won the historic race, and Alan Moffat and Jim Richards (Mustangs) had a thrilling saloon car finish.

  • Alan Moffat (Mustang): 100.620 mph lap record

Facts

  • McCormack's 100-mile 1974 NZ Grand Prix winning time of 52min 29.8sec was about 3 seconds less than the winning time in 1973 and his average was 114.419 mph.
  • Peter Gethin set a 120.566 mph record for the 2.13-mile Wigram aerodrome circuit in the 1974 Grand Prix.
  • About 20,000 spectators ringed the Wigram circuit for the 1974 Lady Wigram Trophy meeting.
  • After the Wigram round Gethin led the Stuyvesant series with 16 points, from McCormack on 15; the final New Zealand round was at Teretonga Park and four Australian rounds followed, starting at Oran Park.
  • Moffat and Richards collided just after the finish line in the 1974 invitation saloon race and went through the barrels; neither driver was hurt.
  • Tyre wear was the deciding factor in the 1974 Grand Prix; McCormack's team chose a harder compound and ran without trouble.
