Airfield motorcycle title to Boote

Nineteen-year-old Christchurch rider J. A. Boote (Levi's Yamaha TZ750) won the open class of the New Zealand airfield motorcycle championships at Wigram, setting an unofficial lap record and being timed at 150.9 mph on the back straight. Napier's K. Turner (Yamaha TZ350) was second and Christchurch lightweight S. Avant (Yamaha 250) third, surviving a protest over his machine's engine size. Boote complained that the Lady Wigram meeting had cut the motorcycles to a single race.

  • Boote said the Yamaha would be capable of about 165 mph on the Wigram straight and 180 mph on a longer one.
  • Boote's unofficial 1:22.6 lap equalled 92.83 mph on the 2.13-mile Wigram circuit.
