Stewart wins after rivals' crash

Jackie Stewart (V8 two-litre BRM) won the 101-mile 1966 Lady Wigram Trophy in a new race record of 1:03:44.1, with Attwood second in another BRM; the two shared the Tasman lead on 15 points. Gardner (Brabham) and Clark (Lotus) were eliminated on lap 4 when Gardner's brakes failed at the hairpin and he rammed Clark. Palmer took third in Clark's 1965 Lotus, with Martin fourth. Stewart set a lap record of 1:25 (about 97 mph) in the race, after a practice record of 1:23.8 (about 99 mph) on Friday. Heats were run in the wet; the crowd was over 20,000.

On the fourth lap Gardner's brakes failed as he ap proached the hairpin and he rammed the ill-fated Clark. Neither driver was hurt but the cars were damaged and out of the race.
