Farewell to a racer

Obituary of Ian 'Munty' Munt, 54, an OSCA racer and association secretary, who died of a heart attack at the final meeting of the season at Timaru, minutes after setting his fastest ever lap there. He began racing at Ruapuna in the mid 1960s, raced in Australia, returned in 1974 in a Capri Chev and from 1993 raced a self-built Commodore. He won the outright OSCA title once, in 1977, and was runner-up on several occasions. His eldest son Evan made his OSCA debut at Timaru that day.

His was one of the friendly faces in pit lane Although he was not backward in expressing his opinion it was always carefully considered. I respected that. It still hasn't sunk in that we won't be seeing him around the circuits and in the clubrooms at Ruapuna next season. It probably won't until the new season starts. There will definitely b something missing Maybe we can take comfort ir knowing that he died doing something he really enjoyed doing. and that there is now another Munt coming along in motorsport to take over where he left off. To his wife Vivienne, and his sons Evan. Darren and Ryan, we at Canterbury Racer offer our sincere condolences. John Hawkins
