Wigram: Back to the future

The Motor Racing Club, which stopped running the Lady Wigram Trophy meeting in 1994, announces with Canterbury Car Club support a nostalgia meeting at Ruapuna on 31 October - 1 November 1998 for cars, replicas and motorbikes from the 45 years of Wigram racing, from Cooper Climax and Maserati 250F through Formula 5000s, Pacifics and Brabhams, plus touring car and Shell Sport Saloon races and motorbikes. 5 - 98 Wig Back to t By Errol Maffey Back in 1994 when the Motor Racing Club, because of reasons beyond its control, decided to no longer run the Lady Wigram Trophy meeting, many members of the club hoped that one day there would be another meeting to carry the tradition on. With support from the Canterbury Car Club these dreams are about to become a reality. The weekend of October 31 November 1 will see these cars and motorbikes that made Wigram such a special place back in action on the Ruapuna circuit. The main focus for the meeting will be on open wheelers. Because we don't have a premier class in this category the South Island does not get to see Formula 5000s, Brabhams or Pacifics racing. шел he Future even though there are still many of them resident in New Zealand When the concept for the meeting was first discussed it was decided that the eligible vehicles would be cars or replicas of those which raced over the 45 year period of Wigram. This also includes the New Zealand built specials, saloon cars and motorbikes which were raced during this pe- riod The format should provide for a wide selection of vehicles, from Cooper Climax, Maserati 250F, through Formula 5000s, Pacific and Brabhams. The cars will be split into groups according to their speed, as it is realised that there is a huge speed difference between the cars that raced in the 50s through to the 90s as technology developed. Saloon cars, which were always a feature at Wigram, such as Touring Cars and Shell Sport Saloons, will also have races over the weekend. Due to the wide variety of registers that have raced over the years, it is envisaged that there will be a lot of saloons that are eligible to enter the meeting. The motorbikes, like the open wheelers. Will probably be split into categories depending on size or age, as the club is hoping to have bikes ranging from early Triumphs and BAs through to late model Formula 1 bikes and possibly a Britten. The whereabouts of much of the machinery is well documented, however there are still many that little is known about. With the help of the public it is hoped that some of these gaps can be filled in. If you have any information that may assist in this The Motor Racing Club can be contacted by writing to PO. Box 13684 Christchurch or by fax on (03) 3494671. It is the intention of the Motor Racing Club to make this a biannual event which will attract top fields and drivers to uniquely commemorate the drivers and machinery of a bygone era.
