Wares Steel, driving a
Nissan Bluebird, wor
opening race on the programme for the Shellsport
championship at wigram
yesterday.
Second was the young
Christcharch driver, Mark
Rutberfore, who recorded
the fastest lap in his Escort
and Farren Burt (Timaru)
was third driving a Toyota
Starles.
Victory in the second beat
went to Rutherford ahead of
Phil Henley (Auckland),
driving a Datsun, and Malcolm Webb in a Toyota
Stariet.
Despite depleted fields,
racing i both beats was
keenly contested, but
Rutherford's win in the
second heat was made
slightly easier by the retirement of both Burt and
SteeL.
A large field of Formala
Ford cars provides good
racing in both beats of the
Sockburn Ford Formula
Ford championship. The
Christchurch driver, Jous
Crawford, easily won both
beats in his Reynard, but
the result is provisional,
pending & • protest against
Crawford's driving.
Kevin Ingram (Fielding)
finisbed second in both
beats driving a Belram. Lou
Schollum (Auckland), driving a Reynard similar to
Crawford's, was third
beat one and Chris Abbott
driving & van Dieman finished third in the second
heat
The O.S.C.A champion,
Trevor Crowe, won both
heats of the Arbuckles
O.S.C.A. series in his potent
Little Toyota Starlet V8
In beat one, he led home
Avon Hyde's Commodore
Chev, while Don Grindley,
in his Mazda . RX-7, wAs
third.
Fuel pressure problems
robbed John Osborne of any
chance, but these were
sorted out in time for the
second beat.
But once again, Crowe
showed his mastery and
held off Osborne and Hyde.
Grindley was forced out of
the second race with
mechanical problems just
before the start.
Bruce Anderson, of Auckland, won the only race on
the programme for the
ANZ. Bank New Zealand
touring car championship.
In his Pinepac Motorcraft
Falcon, Anderson finished
comfortably clear of Rod
Collingwood, in a Nissan,
and Mike Small, driving a
Charger:
Murray Starnes (Palmerston North) won the first
heat of the A.G.C. Finance
Ford Laser Sport championship, from Ed Lamont and
Trevor Parmentor.
The second beat was won
by Warren Hisiop from
Lamont and Starnes.
Ted Jarvis (Auckland) fell
victim to some nudging at
the hairpin, resulting in
severe damage so his car.
The South Island Production Saloon championship
race was won by Rod Collingwood, ahead of Grabam
Jenkins, driving a Commo
dore, and Mike Small, in his
Charger.
The final race was the
traditional flying farewell,
run from a reverse grid
with positions being determined by the organisers.
Avon Hyde, who "had
played second fiddle so
Crowe earlier in the day,
turned the tables this time.
He went very fast to beat
Osborne and Crowe
Osborne had a nasty
moment when leaving the
Club curve midway through
the race. However, he managed to regain control and
avoid what could have been
& nasty accident.
