Lady Wigram Trophy race to be decided on Sunday

Preview of the 1983 Lady Wigram Trophy, final round of the Just Juice Formula Pacific series, which was the most open series since Formula Pacific became New Zealand's international category. Recaps the earlier rounds (Berg won both Bay Park heats, Oxton was Grand Prix winner at Pukekohe, Hunter and O'Brien won the Manfeild heats) and gives short profiles of the main drivers.

Facts

  • Only 1.18 seconds separated the fastest from the slowest qualifier at Manfeild for the penultimate round of the Just Juice Formula Pacific series in January 1983.
  • At the 1983 New Zealand Grand Prix at Pukekohe, Dave McMillan and David Oxton each won a heat, and Oxton was declared the winner on aggregate because McMillan retired in heat 2 with electrical trouble.
  • Norm Hunter won the first Manfeild heat from start to finish and Charlie O'Brien won the second in January 1983.
  • The Ralt RT4, designed by Ron Tauranac, was generally acknowledged as the most successful Formula Pacific racer in the world in 1983.
  • Each international round of the Just Juice series consisted of two heats, with results by aggregate points.
