Historic Invicta racer being restored after 27 years

A 1933 sports-model Invicta, which stood unused in a Christchurch garage for 27 years, is being restored by an enthusiast who declined to be named. The car was owned in the 1940s by Frank Bennett, who raced it at the first Wigram event in 1949 and finished second after leading by a lap. The article describes its unusual features and quirks.

Facts

  • Frank Bennett paid about $1200 for the Invicta in the 1940s and raced it at the first Wigram event in 1949, finishing second after leading by a lap.
  • The Invicta, built at Cobham, England, is capable of 160 km/h, with a 100 litre fuel tank, and had covered about 113,000 km; only one other like it was in New Zealand.
  • The Invicta's handbook says a driver could stay in top gear all the time because of the power; the engine was slow-revving with a 4000 rpm maximum.
