Mighty Mustang back on track SOOn The mighty PDL Mustang, reputed to be the fastest saloon car in Australia and New Zealand, will be seen again on New 'Zealand racing circuits this season. The Mustang Two will be driven by Timaru's Lea Leonard. while the earlier model. Mustang One, will be in the hands of Christchurch driver Dave Baker. Earlier this year Mustang Two was forced off New Zealand tracks by regulations which many regarded as created to negate its superiority over others in its class. Even after aterations to the car so it would meet the new regulations, there were attempts to have it disqualified. At that point team boss Mr Bob Stewart decided to take his car to campaign in Australia and at Kuala Lumpur. It performed with distinction. Apparently there bas been a change of heart on the part of motor racing administra tors in New Zealand, and the team has been invited to compete at Bay Park on January 2. then at the New Zealand Grand Prix meeting, Pukekohe. on January i. This will be followed by competition at Manfield on January 15, and possibly at Wigram and Teretonga. Later, the mustang Two may return to Australia, leaving Baker and the Mustang One to race in New Zealand. Mustang Two first saw the racing track in January of this year, and immediately caused a sensation. Built with a radically new concept around a 550 horsepomer V& engine, it was first across the line in the opening round of the New Zealand- Australia saloon car test series at Bay Park. Later it was relegated to third place because Leonard had jumped the start. the second race however, Leonard and the Mustang dominated, and nothing could match them as they raced away to win. The car left for Australia in March.
