The New Zealand driver, who now races in Australia, tried repeatedly to pass Moffatt but could not quite manage it and eventually had to withdraw when the cockpit filed with choking oil fumes and. blinded him. Leonard did not have a chance to race Moffatt in that event. for a steering tie-rod broke on the pace lap before the rolling start. Leonard said afterwards that he was rather glad it happened on the pace lap, because one lap later he would have been doing 160j m.p.h. rather than 60. Even with these two out! Moffatt did not have the race all his own way. Jack Nazer (Auckiand, Victor V8)! caught the Monza on the sixth lap. and a lap later passed it on the outside of the curve after the pits - a heart-stomoing manoeuvre But when the came to the hairpin Moffat elbowed his way through to the front again. taking advantage of Nazer's difficulty in negotiating a few tail-enders. Nazer had the satisfaction of setting the fastest lap. Although the main race was a fiasco, the crowd did see some exciting stuff, and nothing was quite as good as the three-lap match race between Moflatt, Leonard, Richards and Red Dawson (Chey Monza). This brilliant piece of driving was the most memorable of the day, and Richards deserved his win. Dawson added interest to the match race by taking a short cut at the loop and almost catching • the other three by the end. The Hutchinson Motors Flying Farewell promised toj be a grand race, and Richards set the pace by passing Moffatt on the outside at the corner after the start.
