Kisses and champagne: McRae's trophy drive
Behind McRae's faultless 1972 Lady Wigram Trophy win lay overnight drama: a cracked cylinder head found after practice, a spare engine fitted by mechanic Joe Wright with a water leak, so the car reached the circuit only half an hour before the race. Hobbs led off the line but McRae took the lead at the first bend. Hobbs ran second for 26 laps before a puncture dropped him to 11th, and Matich was put out on lap 10. Max Stewart's Elfin also overheated after an engine change.
