preview · Peter GreensladeLady Wigram race holds vital points
Ahead of the 18th Lady Wigram Trophy the 1972 Tasman points were led by Mike Hailwood (10) with Frank Gardner and Graham McRae on 9, so the race could make or break the front runners. Gardner was a doubtful starter after damaging his Lola T300 at Levin, and the revised, faster Wigram circuit favoured a close battle among five or six drivers.
Facts
- The 1972 Tasman championship had eight races, with the New Zealand section ending at Teretonga Park, Invercargill, on 30 January.
- Before the 1972 Lady Wigram Trophy, Tasman points stood at Hailwood 10, Gardner 9, McRae 9, Matich 6, Oxton 1.
- The 1972 revised Wigram circuit had fewer slow corners and top speeds were expected to reach about 190 mph on the main straight.
- McRae's carburetted Chevrolet-engined Leda GM1 produced less power than petrol-injected rivals but put more power on the ground.
feature · Peter GreensladeCity hit hard if Tasman series dumped?
After the fatal New Zealand Grand Prix accident at Pukekohe in which Bryan Faloon died and Graeme Lawrence was badly hurt, Greenslade warns that international bodies might demand costly safety improvements on NZ circuits, which could end the Tasman series. He notes Christchurch would lose big spending by overseas teams, one of which paid a hotel bill over $2200, and that the Motor Racing Club would pay $12,000 in trophy race prize money.
Facts
- Bryan Faloon was fatally injured in the 1972 New Zealand Grand Prix at Pukekohe, and Graeme Lawrence was badly hurt.
- The Motor Racing Club was to pay out $12,000 in trophy race stake money for the 1972 Lady Wigram Trophy.
- One overseas team at the 1971 Lady Wigram meeting paid a hotel bill of more than $2200 in a single week.

teams, and some of the
local entrants for that matter, are tight-lipped when it
comes to discussing money,
but there is little doubt that
while some are on shoestring budgets most spend
considerable sums in the
course of their New Zealand campaigns.
For example, one overseas team at the last Lady

all accounts, was only one
of a number of substantial
