The fastest circuit: Pukekohe or Wigram?

Argues that a race average of 105 mph in the 1969 Lady Wigram Trophy would make the 2.3-mile Wigram circuit New Zealand's fastest, as Amon's 1969 NZ Grand Prix win at Pukekohe was at 105 mph. It reviews the growth in Wigram speeds since Morrie Proctor's 66.17 mph win in 1949 and lists all winners and fastest laps to 1968, noting lap times of 1:16-1:17 (about 107-109 mph) might be within reach in 1969.

Facts

  • Chris Amon won the 1969 New Zealand Grand Prix at Pukekohe at 105 mph; in 1968 he won there at just under 103 mph while Jim Clark won the Lady Wigram Trophy at about 102.5-103 mph.
  • Pukekohe was 1.75 miles; Wigram 2.3 miles, so Wigram was potentially faster.
  • Clark and Amon set the Wigram lap record of 104.02 mph (1min 19.6sec) in 1968; drivers usually lap faster in qualifying than in the race because of oil and rubber on the track.
  • Wigram's first race in 1949 was won by Morrie Proctor's Riley 9 at 66.17 mph; Frank Bennett's 4.5-litre Invicta had the fastest lap at 68 mph.
  • There was no Wigram meeting in 1955 because of aerodrome sealing; the 1961 distance was shortened to 99.452 miles because of rain.

Can Amon make it a hat-trick this season?

With Chris Amon having won the first two 1969 Tasman rounds (NZ Grand Prix and Levin) as in 1968, the question was whether he could win Wigram too; a win would take him to 27 points. Tasman points were Amon 18, Courage 10, Rindt 6, Geoghegan 5, Gardner 4, Bell 3, Lawrence 3, McRae 1. Graeme Lawrence, first resident driver in the Grand Prix, was expected to be top resident again, challenged by Roly Levis and Laurence Brownlie.

Facts

  • Tasman Championship points before the 1969 Lady Wigram Trophy: Amon 18, Courage 10, Rindt 6, Geoghegan 5, Gardner 4, Bell 3, Lawrence 3, McRae 1; four races followed Wigram.
  • In 1968 Amon won the first two Tasman rounds but failed to win another race after Levin.

With two Tasman Championship races run and won by No. 1 Ferrari team driver Chris Amon, thereby repeating 1968 history, the big question mark poised over the Lady Wigram Trophy race on Saturday is whether the 25-yearold New Zealander can improve on his 1968 New Zealand «double" and make it a hat-trick this; time. Last year Amon failed to win another race after the second round at Levin. A win at Wigram on Saturday would take his points total to 27 and, although that would not be unbeatable in the series! —for there will be four races; after Wigram—he would be in an extremely strong position. With points awarded on the basis of 9, 6, 4, 3, 2 and 1 for the first to sixth places, thei position at present is: Chris Amon (N.Z.), 2.4 Fer-! rari V6, 18. Piers Courage (U.K.), 2.5 Brabham-Cosworth-Ford 110. Jochen Rindt (Austria), 2.50 Lotus-Cosworth-Ford V8, 6. Leo Geoghegan (Aus.), 2.5 Lotus-Repco V8, 5. Frank Gardner (Aus.), 2.5! First resident driver home in the New Zealand Grand Prix, Graeme Lawrence looks like being the man to fill the same berth in the Lady Wigram Trophy race. However he might well have his work cut out by former national champion Roly Levis and up and coming Laurence Brownlie. ¡Lawrence will be driving his Formula 2 McLaren M4A, while Levis and Brownlie will be in Formula 2 Brabhams. All three cars are powered by the 1600 e.c. Cosworth-Ford FVA engine, the leading power unit in European Formula 2 racing.
