Pukekohe's image shattered at Wigram

Peter Greenslade reviews the 1967 Lady Wigram meeting. Although the 100 mph race lap prize was not won, Jim Clark and Jackie Stewart lapped Wigram above 100 mph in Friday training (Stewart 100.24 mph, Clark 101.2 mph), ending Pukekohe's reputation as the fastest circuit. Wind and a slick, oily surface slowed race-day laps; Stewart's retirement after a flying marker tyre and Brabham's overheating left Clark to win easily. Hulme, Palmer's retirement with a broken crankshaft, and Levis's sixth place are also covered.

Lap times

  • Jackie Stewart (BRM): 100.24 mph practice
  • Jim Clark (Lotus-Climax): 1:21.8 practice
  • Jack Brabham (Repco-Brabham V8): 1:25.0 fastest race lap
  • Jack Brabham (Repco-Brabham V8): 1:23.8 qualifying

Facts

  • On the Friday before the 1967 Lady Wigram Trophy, Jackie Stewart lapped at 100.24 mph and Jim Clark at 101.2 mph in training, but the 400 pound prize for a race lap at 100 mph remained unclaimed.
  • The 400 pound side prize, donated by Manchester Car Sales Ltd, was built up over several years and might reach 500 pounds by Wigram 1968.
  • Stewart complained that water-filled drums used as course markers at Wigram were hazardous; a marker tyre ended his 1967 Lady Wigram Trophy on lap five at the control tower bend.
  • Brabham pulled into the pits after 24 laps with an overheating engine, lost about ten laps and finished 13th.
  • In 1967 the Motor Racing Club set the grid for races on practice performance rather than the practice times alone.
  • The Timaru Trophy meeting of the South Canterbury Car Club followed on 4 February 1967 and Teretonga Park held an international meeting on 28 January 1967.

Stewart was unhurt.
  • World champion Jack Brabham watches a mechanic inspect the badly over-heated engine of his Repco-Brabham V8 after a pit stop during the Lady Wigram Trophy race. Brabham pulled in after twenty-four laps, continued after losing about ten laps and finished thirteenth. He had the fastest lap of the day, 1min 25sec, averaging 97.41 mph.
