Stewart wins preliminary of big race

Jackie Stewart (BRM) won the second 25-mile preliminary for the 1967 Lady Wigram Trophy from Jack Brabham (Repco V8), with Jim Clark third and Attwood fourth, 0.4 sec ahead of Hulme; Palmer was sixth ahead of Bartlett and Gardner. Stewart's fastest lap of 1:23.8 (about 99 mph) may have come from BRM switching overnight from Goodyear to Firestone tyres. Roly Levis won the 1.5-litre preliminary from Bill Stone, Dene Hollier and John Weston.

Tough job to clean airfield

After the 1967 Lady Wigram Trophy, the Motor Racing Club and helpers (Boy Scouts from Rangiora and Kaiapoi Junior Chamber of Commerce members) cleared litter, grandstands, tents and straw bales so the RNZAF airfield was ready by 8.30 pm Saturday, about four hours after the last race. Over 20,000 attended and gate takings were considerably up on the previous year.

Facts

  • RNZAF Station Wigram had to be ready for operations by 6 am Sunday after the 1967 Lady Wigram meeting; the clear-up was finished by 8.30 pm Saturday.
  • More than 20,000 people attended the 1967 Lady Wigram Trophy meeting.

Wigram broadcast

A listener complains that radio coverage of the 1967 Lady Wigram meeting consisted of only three sessions of about two laps each, contrasting poorly with the broadcasts from Pukekohe and Levin.
