The 1965 Lady Wigram Trophy race
winner, Jim Clark, repeated the performance this afternoon when he won the
101.2-mile South Island classic at an
average speed of about 96 miles an hour
in his 2-litre V8 Lotus Climax.
Clark covered the distance in 63min
34.1sec-1Osec less than last year's winning
race record, set by Jackie Stewart (B.R.M.).
Second home was the No. 2 B.R.M. driver,
Richard Artwood, 16.9sec in arrears. These were
the only two to go the forty-four laps.

The victor garlanded with laurel leaves . • Jim Clark makes a speech after winning this afternoon's
Lady Wigram race.
The anticipated 100 mile an
hour lap did not come up and
so the side prize of £400 for
the first man to do it, will
remain in the Motor Racing
Club's account until Wigram,
150.
Stewart approached it this
morning in his preliminary
heat when he relurned Imm
23.8sec, just isec outside the
limit.
It might well have been
faken on this afternoon if
Stewart had remained in the
тасс.
The current nalional chanpion, Jim Palmer, drove exceptionally well in his 2.5 Repco-
Brabham • Climax to run in
fifth spot, ahead of Gardner
and Bartlett for fourteen laps.
He drifted back and two laps
later was out of the race with
engine bearing trouble.
Unlucky
get underway at 2.30 this
ailernoon.
The wind, which had been
a cold north-easterly this
morning, swung round to a
warm north-westerly breeze
and everyone was hoping that
the 100 miles an hour would
come up.
Clark made a fier of a start
but had Stewart, Altwood.
Brabham and Hulme close by.
Next in line were Gardner and
Barlett, with Palmer in close
allendance and then came
Levis.
It soon became obvious that
Clark was out to win from
start lo finish if possible. In
the first couple of laps he
drew out a few car lengths on
Stewart but the B.R.M.
driver gathered him in again
and was right on his lail
through into the faleful lap
when he was eliminated in
dramatic fashion.
Another unlucky one was the
young Wanganui drivel,
Graeme Lawrence who had
been so successful with his 1.5
Brabham-Ford this season.
He made several pit stops in
vain attempts to remedy overheating trouble.
Indeed, although the day was
overcast, wigram and temperatures were
high at on the
fast power-driving circuit, overheating put paid to the chances
of several drivers.
A crowd, estimated unofhcially at more than 20,000, was
on hand to see the trophy race
Comfortable
With Stewart out of the way
Clark was left in a comfortable siluation-well clear of
Brabham who had Hulme and
Attwood too close for comfort.
Altwood, realising the chips
were down with his leader
out of the race, got down to
work smartly, first to pass
Hulme and then Brabham.
After the full day of racing
the track became lairly
treacherous, Oil droppings
and rubber made it extremely
but Clark and Atfwood greas handled the going in
immaculate fashion. Hulme
and Brabham seemed to be on
the ragged edge and wagging
their lails in spectacular
fashion.
In the meantime Palmer was
going well and had the measure of Gardner and Bartlelt.
Dropped Out
Of the rest Levis was doing
best of all, but he had the
Lotus Ford driver Dene Hollier
on his tail until the lalter
dropped out with ignition
trouble.

perfect order, had an
chair drive, well clear of Allwood who seemed content lo
hold his place.
Next in line was Hulme in,
his sick-sounding car, contfortably clear of Gardner and
Bartlett, now Palmer had
gone.
Levis was next, fairly well
clèar of Jim Boyd (2.5 Repeo-
[Brabham Climax). And this
pair were a lap ahead of Levis'
team-mate Bill Stone (1.5
Brabham Ford) and Ian Dawson (2.5 Repco-Brabham
Climax).
In the concluding stages il
was just a question of whether
Clark would attempt to fill his
cup to the brim and turn in
a imin 22.8sec lap and so collect the €400 side prize.
But with four Tasman cham-
, pionship races yet to be run
¡ in Australia he evidently de-
,cided lo be satisfied with
what he had.
