Jensen may be starter at Wigram

Former NZ champion Syd Jensen of Palmerston North was to contest the 1966 Lady Wigram Trophy in his newly acquired 2.5 litre Repco-Brabham-Climax if he could get the car to Christchurch in time. The Lesco Racing Team's 2.5 Brabham-Climax, to have been driven by Neil Whittaker, withdrew after Whittaker crashed (unhurt) at Levin. A demonstration of Pat Hoare's Christchurch-built Ferrari GTO coupe, driven by Jackie Stewart, was planned for the lunch interval.

Facts

  • Syd Jensen won the Gold Star in 1959-60 and rode in the Isle of Man TT twice before racing cars.
  • The Ferrari GTO coupe owned by Pat Hoare was a Christchurch-built conversion of a 3.1 litre single-seater Ferrari that won the 1961-62 Gold Star; Jackie Stewart was to demonstrate it at Wigram in January 1966.

It was the first such programme from a major NZ car maker.

Prizes For Austin A programme of cashprize support for successful Austin drivers has been announced by the Austin Distributors Federation, Petone. It is the first time that a maJor car-manufacturing firm in this country has decided to give comprebensive, tangible assistance to drivers who achieve distinetion in motor sport, and the move follows the tradition of the British Motor Corporation which operates a larger scheme of cash-prize awards on an international basis. Ibe Austin programme started with the first major event on the 1965-66 motor sport calendar-the Wills Sir-hour race for standardspecification saloons at Pukekohe on October 9. The programme comprises a points-prize system covering the 20 major races of the season, with an end-ofseason award of £100 for the top-placed Austin saloon or Drivers sports car driver, and £50 and £25 for those placed second and third; and a $25 cash prize for each class- winning Austin saloon car driver in the four inter- national fixtures during January. The points-culmination system is administered for the federation by the Asso ciation of New Zealand Car Clubs, governing body of motor sport in this country. 0.4551-5 . The cash-prize system for dass winners in the international events at Pukekobe, Levin, Wigram and Tere tonga during January is handled by the federation, which will present the awards on receipt of applications certified by offcials of the meetings. At each of the major race meetings which qualify for the class-winner's prize system, a total of £75 is available to successful Austin drivers. The classes to which the award applies follows the generally-adopted formula of classification and provides a £25 prize for each Austin driver winning in the up-to-1000 C.C., 1001-1300 c.c. and 1601-3000 c.c. classes. To be eligible for awards, Austin cars must be raced in standard production form, or modified only to the extent permitted by the supplementary regulations for a specific meeting.
