No joke, but could win

The BRM, long the subject of jokes in racing circles, could win the Lady Wigram Trophy if Ron Flockhart has better luck than at Ardmore, where he stalled on the start line and overstressed the car catching up. The article describes the new BRM: a new small-tube chassis, four-cylinder twin-overhead-cam engine with large bore (4.05in) and two double-choke Weber carburettors, four-speed gearbox in unit with the final drive, de Dion rear suspension with Watt linkage, double wishbone front suspension and disc brakes.

Facts

  • The 1959 BRM engine had a bore of 4.05in with twin overhead camshafts and two double-choke Weber carburettors.
  • Ron Flockhart stalled the BRM on the start line in the January 1959 NZ Grand Prix at Ardmore.

Formula Libre race

Explains that the Lady Wigram Trophy, like other NZ internationals, is run under Formula Libre conditions, allowing cars of any engine capacity. Formula 1 limits engines to 2500cc and Formula 2 to 1500cc, which is why no NZ event can achieve world championship status.

Facts

  • The 1959 Lady Wigram Trophy was run under Formula Libre rules, with no engine capacity limit.
  • Formula 1 in 1959 limited engines to 2500cc and Formula 2 to 1500cc.

Restrictions There are, in fact. two formulas. Formula I which limits engine capacity to 2500c.c. and Formula II which imposes a limitation of £1500c.c. Other restrictions are also l imposed in these formulas. For instance, whereas a year or two ased, no the cars must use an aviation-type fuel limited to a certain octane rating. The Formula I cars are éligible for the world drivers' and manufacturers' championships and that is why no évent in this country is likely to attain world championship status. Resourcefulness Generally the competitlons committee of the International Automobile Federation introduces a new formula wher it considers that the cars developed under the old one have reached such a stage as to be too fast. At least that is what it amounts to. Inyariably the new formula brings with it restrictions that limit speed. Also invariably after a year or so the new cars begin to equal and better the lap speeds of the cars of the preceding formula. This is, of course, the result ! of the resoucefulness and technical ability of the world's foremost automobile engineers.'
