Welcome to Racing
Drivers
Five overseas racing drivers
who will take part in the Lady
Wigram trophy race tomorrow
were welcomed to Christchurch
by the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.) at an informal reception held in their honour yesterday morning. The drivers were
Reg Parnell, Peter Whitehead. and
Horace Gould, all of England. and
Jack Brabham and Allan McKay.
of Australia.
Although the death of Fen
Wharton at Ardmore had emphasised the risks in motor racing. it
was a sport which did not have
a monopoly of danger, said Nr
Macfarlane. All sports, he said,
offered risks to the participants.
He wished the drivers well in
their events tomorrow.
Replying to the Mayor's wel:
come on behalf of the drivers,
Parnell said he thought the race
would be an even one. "Peter
Whitehead, of course, is very anxious to win the Lady wigram
rophy tor the third time, and I
myself will be doing my best to
take it away. However, there is a
man called Gould who has other
ideas about who will be the win-!
ner, ," he said.
