Famous racing cars at Wigram: Maserati and Ferrari to duel for honours

A technical preview of the 1957 Lady Wigram Trophy comparing the Super Squalo Ferraris of Parnell and Whitehead (four-cylinder, 3422cc, about 280 bhp) with Horace Gould's 250F Maserati (six-cylinder, 2.5 litre twin-cam). It recounts the Maserati-Ferrari rivalry back to Campari's 1933 Montlhery win over Nuvolari, and notes the Maserati may suit Wigram's airfield corners while the Ferraris had proved reliable at Melbourne and Ardmore.

Facts

  • Stirling Moss (Maserati) won the Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne in the 1956-57 summer series, and Parnell (Ferrari) won at Ardmore.
  • The Super Squalo Ferraris started and finished both the Melbourne and Ardmore races without trouble.

N.Z. driver fastest at Wigram practice

Auckland's Ron Roycroft set the fastest practice lap at Wigram before the 1957 Lady Wigram Trophy, 1:27 in his Ferrari, only 0.3 seconds outside the lap record. Whitehead managed 1:29.2 and Parnell 1:30.8, with at least six others within ten seconds of Roycroft. Gould had not yet practised, and grid positions were not yet decided because some entrants were still arriving from the North Island.

Lap times

  • R. Roycroft (Ferrari): 1:27 practice
  • P. N. Whitehead (Ferrari Super Squalo): 1:29.2 practice
  • Reg Parnell (Ferrari Super Squalo): 1:30.8 practice
  • S. Jensen (Cooper Climax): 1:31 practice
  • R. Gibbons (Jaguar D-type): 1:32 practice
  • Jack Brabham (Cooper Climax): 1:33 practice
  • F. Shuter: 1:33 practice
  • R. Jensen (Ferrari Monza): 1:33 practice
  • T. Clark (H.W.M.): 1:33 practice
  • P. M. Hoare (Maserati): 1:37 practice
  • R. McCutcheon (Nermac Special): 1:40 practice
  • R. Moore (Cooper Climax): 1:41 practice
  • A. McKay (Cooper Climax): 1:42 practice
  • Tony Gaze (Ferrari): 1:26.7 lap record

Facts

  • Roycroft's fastest practice lap in 1957 of 1:27 was about 87 mph, 0.3 seconds slower than Tony Gaze's 1956 lap record.
  • Wigram was notoriously heavy on tyres; in 1956 Parnell, Whitehead and Gaze only just finished 150 miles without stopping for fuel and tyres.

Arrangements for traffic

Christchurch City Council and the Motor Racing Club arranged special buses from Cathedral Square and advised entries via Lincoln and Middle Lincoln roads (10 lanes), the Main South road gate and the Wigram entrance. Gates opened at 9 a.m. with the first 350cc motor-cycle race at 10 a.m., and volunteers from the Papanui RSA staffed the gates. Officials appealed for care with cigarettes.
