Base to close in style
Wigram's closure after nearly 60 years as an air force base will be marked by a service at Christchurch Cathedral on 10 September, and on 14 September a parade reviewed by the Chief of Air Staff and a ball for 2500 people. The article recalls Sir Henry Wigram forming the Canterbury Aviation Co in 1916 at Sockburn, the 182 pilots trained during the war, and the airfield's role as the RNZAF's flying and technical training base.
