Circuit extensions and Wigram's future

Circuit extensions at Manfeild and Ruapuna have been given the all-clear. Ruapuna's extension is urgent because Wigram is likely to close with the RNZAF base, though the Canterbury Car Club's ability to finance it is in doubt and the City Council, Motor Racing Club and Car Club may combine efforts. Most motor racing people (the Motor Racing Club excepted) accept losing Wigram is not so bad.

Facts

  • Planning approval was given in early 1993 for circuit extensions at Manfeild and Ruapuna, which were expected to proceed due to Wigram's likely closure.
  • Ruapuna was given approval to use land to the west of the present circuit, extending straight ahead from the hairpin.
