Baird maintains By JOHN HAWKINS Craig Baird maintained his unbeaten record in the Peter Jackson series, but had to hold off a spirited challenge from a British driver, Julian Westwood, in the Lady Wigram Trophy race yesterday. Rain began to fall shortly before the start of the 26 lap race and at the green light Baird quickly got ahead of the pole position man, Ken Smith, as the cars disappeared in a cloud of spray. On the second lap Smith missed a gear and was further demoted by Westwood and Paul Radisich. Baird took advantage of the clear track to pull a four second gap early in the race but Westwood was closing by lap eight and by half distance was in a position to challenge. The gap fluctuated when the two lapped back markers, but while Westwood tucked right in behind Baird's Reynard - and at one point got alongside - he could not fluster the New Zealander and Baird won by less than a second. Two laps from the end Smith finally passed Radisich after tracking him for most of the race, and he said afterwards that the missed gear change had cost Peter Jackson motor racing series, when he won the Lady W record i him the chance of a place in the top two. Baird said that he had decided to play it safe and not risk any errors on the wet track, and that he had survived a scare before the race when his crew bad to rush to replace a gearbox bearing. Smith had led at the start of the earlier heat, but Baird swept past on the third lap and was never headed. Westwood and Radisich had been delayed when the latter braked too late for the hairpin and while the British driver recovered to take third place, Radisich dropped to fifth with overheating problems. n Lady Greg Murphy was the winner of the McLaren Trophy division in the first heat but had to give best to Chris Maxwell after a race long battle in the second. Kayne Scott set a scorching pace in the Primo Tranzam class, recording a lap of 70.76 seconds in the first heat in his Ford Sierra, a time bettered only by the top three Formula Atlantics. Don Grindley took second place in the first two heats, the only driver to stay remotely in touch, and went on to win the final heat after Scott failed to start because Of a jammed rocker.
