3-12-84 9012-84 Wigram lead to Jones An American driver, Davy Jones, led the field ofter the first proctice session for tomorrow's Skyline. i Garages Lady Wigram Trophy race with a quickes! Lap time of 7.1.06ser. Behind him a group of four drivers were separated by less than 6sec with the experienced New Zealand pairing of Ken Smith and Dave MeMillan leading the charge..: Smith who had not driven his car since March recorded a time of 71.0fsec." McMillan, who has just returned to the country after competing in the Australian Grand Prix, was only 05sec, behind. Steve Cameron, a New Zealander now resident in the U.S., was fourth fastest with 71.59sec, closely followed by American Driver, Jeff MacPherson, 71.66sec. Jones' 20-year-old team-mate, Ross Cheever, Lailed to record a time after sensationally rolling his car during an untimed session. Cheever, who had not driven a Formula Pacific "car until a private session on Friday, found • himself in close company with Jones. In trying to close the gap he had a brake lock-up, clipped a tyre marker and tossed the nimble car over. Cheever emerged unscathed but the car sustained suspension and body damage and his crew faced a race: against the clock to have the car on the starting grid tomorrow. "It was my own fault. I was going too quiek too soon," Cheever said afterwards. The only race on the day's programme was for the South Island Formula Ford championship where top national contender, John Crawford, raced to a comfortable win over Andrew McElrea. Phillip Butcher finished third after a race-long scrap with Allan Duthie and Dean Gullery. Freeth wins Wigram race Sixty-two_starters contested the Lady Wigram motor-cycle challenge run in conjunction with Lady Wigram international car racing yesterday. The sheer numbers made for exciting racing as riders of many types of machines fought their way through crowded corners. Because there were so many entries, the faster formula one machines were sent off 6sec ahead of the formula twos, though it did not take long for the fastest of the formula two machines to overhaul the formula one back markers. As expected, Auckland's Roger Freeth on the powerful Suzuki Formula One racer was the man of the day. He took a comfortable first place in both races to secure his aggregate points and win the challenge. In the first race. Trevor Kirby, riding a standard Suzuki GSX1135. led the field until taken by the race prepared machines of Freeth. Farrow and Peter Benson on his Yamaha TZ750 racer. Behind these three an exciting tussle began between Kirby and Kiwi international Terry Paviell riding a Yamaha RZ 500. At the last corner. Kirby managed to shake Paviell off in the traffic and lead the strong field of production bikes home. Predictions for the formula two were also close. Young Rob Lewis, riding a Yamaha XJ600, beat Nell Smith of Blenheim while Graeme Richardson riding a Yamaha RZ350 was third Neil Smith was expected to ride a Yamaha TZ250 but instead chose his modified Yamaha XJ550. The second race saw Freeth lead virtually from start to finish. A long way behind him in a battle for second and third places were Norris Farrow on another Suzuki Formula One and Peter Benson on: the Yamaha. Farrow won to avenge his withdrawal in the first race. Behind them, a similar tussle had begun between Kirby •and Paviell. This time Paviell managed to get past Kirby and ride the Yamaha into fourth place. Yamaha made a clear sweep of the formula two class with Lewis again beating Smith and Richardson quite comfortably. Final results of aggregate points over the two races were: Formula One - Roger Freeth (Suzuki 1140) 1, Peter Benson (Yamaha TZ750) 2. Trevor Kirby (Suzuki GSX1135) and Terr Paviell (Yamaha RZ500) 3 equal, Norris Farrow (Suzuki 1140) Michael McCotcheon (Yamaha RZ500) 6. Peter Shapcott (Yamaha TZ350) 7. Paul Stace (Suzuki GSX1135) 8. Formula Two - Rob Lewis (Yamaha XJ600) 1. Neil Smith (Yamaha XJ550) Graeme Richardson (Yamaha a RZ350 3. Peter Walsh (Yamaha RZ350) 4. Peter Waters (Yamaha RZ350) 5. Bernie Turner (Kawasaki GP2950) 6. Alan Ramage (Suzuki GSX400H) 7. Steve Radclifie (Ducati Pantab 600) 8
