29-11-84 GARAGES SKYLINE LA IDY WIGRAM TROPHY ME ETING Wigram Air Base Sunday. December 2nd Break more The 1984-85 New Zealand international motor racing series for Formala Pacific cars kicks off on Sunday with the Lady Wigram Trophy meeting sponsored by Styline Gar ages. In a break with tradition, the series will be run in December rather than January as previously, in the belief that more overseas drivers will be attracted to New Zealand following the recent Australian Grand Prix. As the field assembles in Christchurch this week for the first of the four-meeting series, the decision to change the date appears to have had the desired result, although many of the names are not as well known as those which the Australians wooed to Melbourne for their grand prix. New Zealand does not have the dollars to attract the named drivers and the days are gone when the Pormula 1 drivers were encouraged by the likes of Benny Huime, Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon to come to these shores for a summer holiday and a well earned break from the rigours of the yearlong season. In spite of this, the young overseas drivers who will contest the series bring with them potential talent that will eventually push them into tae higher formulas as their careers progress.
