23-9-84 Davy Jone to win Lad By Peter Greenslade Davy Jones, of Syracuse, made Lady Wigram Irophy race history yesterday when he became the youngest man to win the premier race on the 3.429 kilometre circuit which was first used for motor-racing in 1949. The trophy race is now run as two 82.296km races, points being scored in each. •Jones won the first race from end to end, but he had to rest content with a fourth place in the second race Which was won by the Aucklander, David Oxton. Jones scored 30 points to the 26 of Uxton, 24 oi Ren Smith, another Aucklander» and 19 of the Christchurchborn Dave McMillan. Only one other American has won at Wigram. He was Tom Gloy and he turned the trick in 1977. The two races were also the final rounds in the eightrace Just Juice international series for Formula Pacific cars and the most popular winner of the series was Smith, a driver with 25 years of racing behind him and one of the most equable and cheerful people who contest the series each year. He scored 57 points, to the 52 of Jones, so of young Aucklander, Pau Radisich, 45 of Oxton and 24 of McMillan. All the major place- getters in the trophy race and Just Juice series drove English-built Ralt RT4 racers. Jones, who qualified second fastest behind Oxton on Saturday, led the first race from start to finish, having sorted out Oxton before the race was seconds old. He simply ran away from the field and WOD as he liked, leading home Radisich by a margin of 14.88s and averaging 172.921km/h. and McMillan sorted out the Öxton, Radisich, • Smith, minor places eariy in the race, but Mcmillan made a pit stop to replace a tront aerofoil and after that took no really significant part in the contest, eventually fin- Ishing seventh bening Uxton wno bad been running third until the last lap when two teeth on the rubber camshaft drive belt sheered and caused the engine to turn sour. Smith held an early second spot, but was taken first by Radisich and later, when coping with handling car, by Oxton. The sour engine of the latter helped him into third place. The only other contentious competitor was the Australian Andrew Miedecke. He finished fourth behind Smith in yet another Ralt and ahead of Ian Fluz (Britain), who bad raced in reasonably close s youngest y Wigram driver Trophy kyd.: DAVY JONES company with Brett Riley, a New Zealander who does most of his racing in Britain. However, these two parted company when Riley's Dart 83M was stricken by an electrical ailment. The only other retirement was that of Peter Haskett (Chevron B49), of Auckland Oston had an end-to-end win in the second race. He made a perfect start and, although Jones made a good one, the Aucklander shaded him and even by the end of the first lap had a quite appreciable lead. Although Jones held on tenacionsiy, it soon became obvious that he was coping with a sour engine and it steadily wors ened as the race proceeded. McMillan settled into third place ahead of Smith and seemed content to sit there and watch Jones drift back closer to him. It was at the end of the fifteenth of the 24 laps that Mcmillan finaliy passed the young American Smith repeated the dose a couple of laps later. The Ralt Australiaentered cars of Radisich and Miedecke did not feature to any extent• Miedecke, after two fruitless attempts to cure fuel starvation, limped home and Radisich had to pack it in when a wheel bearing failed. Flux and Riley again indulged in their private race, the Englishman eventually getting home to be fifth about 7s ahead of Riley. Ross Cameron, Dunedin, in his elderly March T7B stuck at it valiantly in the Just Juice series and, like Miedecke, completed 21 ot the 24 laps to be classified seventh. Once again Haskett failed to make it to the finish. Like Jones in the first race, Oxton had things very much his own way in the second, but even so his race speed of 173.060km/h was better than that of Jones in the earlier race. Oxton, who won one of the two races last year, was obviously out to prove a point. Also Smith underlined the point that he is no slouch. Last year he set a Wigram record of 70.01s (26.348km/i). This year be made the fastest lap in 70.56s to better the Jones boy's best time of 70.7is in his first race. Smith put up the time in the second race, battling a very strong head wind on the back straight. On the face of it, his effort was probably the most creditable of the day.
