24-1-83 Vici lead cory ers for spi Be n rg as by LINDSAY KERR Canadian Allan Berg in his Ralt RT4 secured a victory and third International Formula Pacific Championships on a windswept Berg's win in the first heat came after the leaders, American Norman Hunter and Auckland's David Oxton, tangled allowing Berg into the lead. He confirmed his win in the second heat with a welljudged race for third place. This race produced some of the most exciting singleseater racing seen Wigram for many years. Hunter started on the pole for the first race after qualifying the fastest in practice with a lap time of 1min 10.4sec. David McMillan was alongside him haying a practice best of 1: 10.64, Berg 1: 10.80 and Ken Smith 1: 10.83. All drivers were driving the modern Palt RT4. Hunter was first out being closely pursued by Oxton with Mcmillan third and Berg fourth. On lap two Berg slipped inside McMillan and went in pursuit of the leaders. Spinning He was not to wait long to gain the lead. On lap five Oxton tried to pass Hunter as they rounded the sweeper on the approach to the long back straight. The two cars touched sending them spinning to either side of the track. • Hunter was forced to withdraw with serious suspension damage. Oxton limped back to the pits only return temporarily before being forced to retire with mechanical problems. McMillan, who damaged the front spoiler of his car, tried in vain to catch the little Canadian but Berg would have nothing of it. He crossed the line six seconds ahead. Smith crossed - the line in third, 15 seconds behind McMillan. American drivers Hubert Phipps in a Tiga and Mike Rosen in a Ralt RT4 put up a tremendous battle for the fourth placing. Rosen had the last say and he led his countryman over the line by L.I seconds. Hunter was unable to repair his car in time to start the second race which left McMillan starting from the pole. Confident McMillan made a confident start in a race that was to be a thriller. As the field settled into position Mcmillan was tolopen by Oxton, Smith, Rosen and Berg. McMillan and Oxton raced nose to tail for the first 12 laps with the widest margin at any one time separating them being less placing to win both the 1983 Lady Wigram Trophy and the Just Juice Wigram circuit yesterday. thàn 1sec. Oxton tried to get by on lap 10 but McMillan quickly shut the gate. On lap 13 Orton finally got by leaving McMillan not only having to decide how to gain the lead again but how to keep Ken Smith out. Smith had been driving the race of his career and was less than a second behind McMillan. With only two laps remaining McMillan's race came to an end when he was forced to retire with mechanical problems. With Smith taking over the second slot Berg who knew he only needed a reasonable placing to secure his victory took over third. On the last lap Smith made a desperate charge at Oxton but Oxton held his composure and crossed the line half a second in front.
