20-9-82 Brazilian driver out to crack the European nut By NICK TOLERTON Brazilian motor-racing driver Roberto Moreno Bopes his success on the New Zealand circuit, which culminates in Sunday's Lady Wigram Trophy race, will clich a place for him in a European racing team this year. The 22-year-old has dominated the New Zealand Aurora AFX series after winning the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne at the expense of world champion Neison Piquet, and previous titleholder Alan Jones. The results put him closer to his dream of becoming a top international Grand Prix driver. "After the race in Christchurch I will be going home to see if I can organise to go back to Europe for Formula Two," he said. It will be "one step up again" after one year and aball in Formula Four and half a season in Formula Three. In his full season in Formula Four Moreno - like a nurber of top drivers, a graduate from kart racing - won the British championship and was runner-up in the European championship. He said that contrary to reports, he is not experienced in single-seaters - hence his decision to race on the South-east Asian and Australian and New Zealand circuit. "It is one step up from the Formula Three. Team managers for Formula Two or Formula One expect experience from you and you've got to get it for yourself." Moreno, who won four of the six heats in the three races up north, was eliminated in the second heat at Manfeild last weekend when his car spun off the track after he hit an oil spill on a corner. "However, the car will be fine for Wigram," be said. . "There is just some fibreglass broken." He does not expect the fact that the airport circuit is a fast track to be an advantage or disadvantage to him — "a racing track is a racing track." But he thinks that not being able to have a test on the circuit before the official practice. will be a liability. "That is not good for me because I do not know the circuit," Moreno said. "The other drivers like Steve Millen and David Oxton already know it. "Any driver needs time to learn a circuit and we will be going straight from the official practice." Moreno's times in the practice laps may not be a good pointer to his race form: "I may not be very fast in pract dedication bo meador for die me be was less interested than most Brazilians and New Zealanders when the two countries were paired in the World Cup soccer finals draw this week. "I hope Brazil win, but I'm not really interested in football," Be said. "I can't even kick a ball" However, he is a keen water skier and sail board sailor and has taken the opportunity to do both in Auckland.
