Wigram pressure

The Lady Wigram Trophy would be crucial to the Formula Pacific title fight among Huub Rothengatter (49 points), John Smith (47) and Steve Millen (45). The fast airbase circuit should suit the Ralts, while Rothengatter's Chevron B48 is slower but he leads through consistency (3-4-3-2). Organisers were anxious for a good gate after the Teretonga race fell through.

Facts

  • The Lady Wigram Trophy heats in 1980 started at 1pm and 3.35pm.
  • The Teretonga race was dropped in 1980 because of poor support the previous year; the Wigram committee knew its own meeting was borderline.
  • Before Wigram 1980 the Formula Pacific series had run at Pukekohe and Manfeild.

For this reason, Smith and New Zealand Grand Prix winner Millen are hopeful of ending the Dutch driver's slender lead tomorrow. Rothengatter's DHL Cherron B48, like the March cars that have been dominant in other years, cannot foot it with the Palts this season for speed.
