"I want to go to North America later this vear and these two wins could be good for linding sponsors there. " he said after his two heat wins in the 30th Lady Wigram Trophy Race. "It would have been great to have won the series for overseas race teams keep a close eye on the top performers in the Formula Pacific Series. " NeMillan said. 3IcMillan's wins yesterday were not good enough for him to get anywhere near winning the series. This honour went to Fabi, who ended with 16÷ points. with Brett Mllev ta New Zealander racing from Britain on 154. McMillan in the series was shunted out twice at Bay Park. overheated twice at Pilsekone. was third twice at Manfeild and then again at Teretonga. He had 8 points when he arrived at Wigram. There were no problems with the car and everything clicked. The threatening rain did not arrive for the heat although rain tyres were handy in the pits. McMillan took the lead from the start but did not leave Fabi far behind. On the 6th lap Fabi passed McMillan. MeMillan said he could not find first gear at a corner and, as he freewheeled in neutral, Fabi went ahead. But McMilan wasnt ready to give up and moved up on Fabi and, at Hutchinson Motors corner ‹ the old Vickerys, McMillan kept his foot down while Fabi eased for the corner. Then there was no holding McMillan. Fabi stuck with him for the next nine laps but gradually slipped back. While this went on at the front a tremendous battle continued for the second and third places with Larry Perkins (Australia' and Brett Riley. Certainly they fell well behind the two leaders but their personal duel continued throughout the race. By the twenty-first of the 24 laps distance 82.5km' Fabi had lost touch with McMillan. Fabi said his March 78-79, with the underskirts. overheated and bi's thi und ler motor-racing driver Teo Fabi won the Formula Pacific series with two seconds at Wigram yes- New Zealander Dave McMillan with two wins at the airfield who goes to better things. Biclilan did litde to his car during the break be tween the two Wigram Iro phy races. Fabi fixed the orerheating problems and changed tyres. As the 130 min between the races ticked away. Melillan joked in his caravan while Fabi was a lonely figure alone in his tent McMillan again had pole position with Fabi on front for the second race. Riley took third place with e faster time over Perkins. Pler Lesser fry provided much of the excitement at the Wigram motor raciag yesterday. First. John Armstrong ‹ Dunedin' showed skill beyond his experience to win the Ford Escort Sport championship. But for excitement. inere was the battle over eight laps between Mark Rutherford ‹ Christchurch) and Graeme Bowkett 'Auckland: for second and third places. Throughout the race these two changed . places, with Rutherford finally getting second. Further back, Ray Williams 'Orewal and Kent Baigent 'Auckland) had a late battle around the trach. More excitement was seen in the battle for the Shell Shop Open Saloon Car Association saloon car race. Inky Tulloch (Mataura, Capri Chevi and Ian Munt (Christchurch. Capri) contested their eight laps with complete fury. Tulloch held on to the lead for most of the race but could not once relax as Munt pressed him until near the end, and actually took the lead once or twice. Most of the thrills in the Motorerait, Sockburn Motors Forkula Ford championshi› again was with the drivers trying for the minor money, The same four were at the front again. They all went away bunched up, screaming for position at Hutchison Motors Corner. Fabi swerved frequently to scrub his new tyres and lost the gamble. Mevillan again took the lead and at the end of the first lap Fabi was third behind Perkins March 77B1 McMillan gradually mored out as Perkins, Fabi and Riley (March 77B) hugged each waiting for a gap. This tense struggle continued. with unchanged places, until the tenth lap. Then the scene changed. At Hertz Rent-A-Car hairpin Fabi hit the nosecone Perkins. foreing Perkins back to fourth. Perkins made one more circuit with his nosecone half off before he pulled out. It was ironic for at Tere- Ity of Palliser ) soon had a lead which he held on to and increased in the eight laps. But behind him. at various times, Mike Finch 'Auckland. Cuda 4'. Jeff Pascoe ‹ Blenheim, Titan, and Mike Austin 'Auckland, Titan 6A) tried to get to the front. Crocker won, with Finch second and then Austin. 'NOISES' In the Shellsport saloon championship series race, Reg Cook ‹ Manurewa Datsun) was favourite and off the front of the grid with a 2sec i drantage in the time trials. Ile went quickly into the lead but before a lap was over he was finished. He said heard "funny noises." felt the engine pull back, and decided he did not want to risk the engine. So that left Bryce Platt (Auckland, Escort› to take over- But Grant Aitken (Dunedin, Datsun) Soon orerhauled him and the two did the remaining laps neck and neck. Far behind in third was John Dymand Christchurch. Datsun) who. turn, had a close encounter tonga Perkins smashed Fabi's nose to put him out. From then on McMillan drove flawlessly opening up a big lead over Fabi but in a slower time than the first race. His best lap this time was Imin 1115sec on the tifteenth. His easy win by I1sec over Fabi moved former Formula one driver Chris Amon to "Most impres sive." McMillan gave all the praise to his crew and his multi-sponsorship. It was his fourth drive at Wigram for his big success. Fabi with six wins, two seconds, a seventh and a nonfinish in the series. never could get near cifillan once he had hit the front. And McMilan showed his saill for he twice took the lead away from the highly-rated Italian. Excitement continued in the Radio Ávon Fiying Farewell saloon race for the fastest saloons at the meeting. This had cars constantly changing _postions because of their different • capacities and made a fitting finale. But excitement of a different kind came in the parade of nostalgia — cars irom 30 years of Wigram racing. They ranked from the 1931 Brooklands Riley, the car which won the first Wigram race in 1949, to the Surtees 1S9B Formula One, which competed in 1974-75. Cars came from the museums for five laps of honour. There were Ransley Rileys, NIGs the Stanton Special. a 1928 Austin 7. the Alfa Romeo P3. which won in 1951-1953 and Hee Gren's RA.
