But for the first 39 laps of the 44-lap (160 km) race he had to be content with watching the flying Finn who has dominated the Stuyvesant series, keke Rosberg, lead him through corner after cornor on the fast airfield circuit. Rosberg had won pole position for the fifth time and led the field round for the first lap until Gloy passed him on the straight. But Rosberg took the lead again coming out of the left-hander after the start-finish straight and held on to it. However Rosberg had a slow puncture in right front tyre of his Chevron and although he built second lead on Gloy's Tui by lap 37 the tyre had let him down and he was forced to change it and lose the race. The leading pair had built up such a lead on the rest of the feld that although Rosberg spent 41 seconds in the pits he still claimed second place. He rejoined the race behind his fellow Finn and Chevron team-mate, Mikko Kozarowitzky, but was able to pass him within a lap. Kozarowitzky's car also had a puncture in the right front tyre and was suffering from gearbox problems. •Gloy had his problems too. A water hose broke loose at some stage and although the motor must have overheated it did not register on the temperature Afterwards Gloy sauge. mechanics found a long crack in the head of the BDA Ford motor. Something was wrong with his right rear tyre turn too. "I was going into the before the straight sideways at full opposite lock. There's Just no way I was going to let-Keke get away, he said as he signed autographs after the race. John Nicholson (Modus), ex-patriate Kiwi who has won two British Formula Atlantic championships, drove a cool race for fourth, and the man who finished third in the series behind Rosberg and Gloy, Bruce Allison (Australla, Rait) overcame the frightening problem of a sticking throttle cable to claim fiith. Dave McMillan (Auckland, Rait) set third fastest time in practice behind Rosberg and Gloy, and although hel could not stay with them in the race he held a good fifth placing until his motor gave up on the thirty-eighth lap. Steve Millen, the winner of the first round of the series at Bay Park, had more bad luck at Wigram when he lost his oil pressure while holding seventh place. Many of the drivers had problems with their cars. Richard Melville (Jamaica, March) held fourth place for the first nine laps until gearbox trouble forced him siow and he finished seventh. But Andrew Miedecke (Australia, Lola) blamed his sixth placing on himself. He worked his way up to fourth and spent a dozen laps fighting off a challenge from Nicholson until the pressure became too intense and he spun near the hangars, losing two places. He spun again a few laps later, but held his place. The young Auckland driver, Steve Emson, having his first race at the wheel of a Formula Pacific car, showed an impressive turn of speed and spent a number of laps duelling. with David Oxton (Auckland, Chevron) until Oxton managed to pass him. They finished eighth and ninth. The only other driver to finish was Alan Crocker (Hamilton, March) whose fastest lap. was five seconds slower than Rosberg's remarkable record of lmin 11 sec. Both Gloy and Kozarowitzky had laps of 1:11.6, with Nicholson a full second slower. Results- Gloy (United States) Tui, land) Chevron, Inland? Chevron Kozarowitsky (Finland) 54:5.5, J. In the 350 race he beat Paul McLauchlan (Christchurch, Yamaha) and Paul Godyer (Wellington, Yamaha) after John Woodley (picton, suzukı) dropped from a chalienging second to fourth. Woodley pushed Avant (Yamaha) hard all the way in the race for machines up to 1050 cu. cm but could not quite catch him. McLauchlan was third.
