Rosberg nearly stayed home

Stephen Stuart reports Keke Rosberg, favourite to win at Wigram, was almost a non-starter in the Stuyvesant series; American dealer Fred Opert invited him in June but terms weren't agreed until days before Christmas. After retiring at Bay Park with a flat battery, Rosberg won the NZ Grand Prix at Pukekohe and led Manfeild from start to finish, then dominated at Teretonga. He planned to fly back to Europe the evening of the Wigram race to test a new Formula Two car for Warsteiner Euro-Race.
