Race fans will miss Paul Fahey's skills

Four times New Zealand saloon car champion Paul Fahey gave the Lady Wigram crowd a farewell thrill in the Radio Avon saloon invitation race, outdriving Australia's and New Zealand's best for the most devastating win of his career. Fahey, who is retiring after the Bank of New South Wales series at Manfeild in April, began on motorcycles, represented New Zealand at the Isle of Man TT, and won the 1965 national saloon title.

Facts

  • Paul Fahey won the NZ saloon championship in 1965 with 62 points to Rod Coppins' 30.
  • Fahey beat the big V8s at Wigram in an Escort FVA, later driving his own Mustang and the PDL team's Mustang.
  • In the 1975 Radio Avon race at Wigram, Fahey's Capri lost its glass fibre front fender and half its front but he still won.
  • Fahey intended to retire after the Bank of New South Wales series at Manfeild in April 1975.
