I'll start at the back for a fee: McRae

Triple Tasman champion Graham McRae joked at Wigram that he would start from the back of the grid for $1000, or accept a five-second handicap for another $1000, before the NZ Grand Prix. With no points yet from the first two Stuyvesant rounds, he admitted he desperately needed a win, and was using his Pukekohe engine rather than a new 'strong' engine. He expected to lap about 63sec (121.714 mph) in qualifying.

19-1-74 I'll start at the back for a fee-. McRae By PETER GREENSLADE With not much more than a flicker of a smile, Graham MicRae, the triple Tasman champion racing driver, said at Wigram today he would be prepared to start from the back of the grid for $1000 in the New Zealand Grand Prix here tomorrow. NEW ENGINES Most of the drivers are using new engines this week. They are what they call their "strong ones," which are a necessity on this power driving circuit: However. McRae is using his Pukekohe engine which he says develops its speed power at a comparatively leisurely 6500rpm. Most of the engines being used in the series deliver their peak power at considerably greater engine speeds. He would also be prepared to accept a five second handicap for another $1000. peared condent about makung it lour in a row with his McRae GM2, but with two of the eight races in the Peter Stuyvesant's $100,000 series already decided, McRae has yet to get on the scoreboard and he admitted he desperately needs a win tomorrow. McRae said it was within his and the car's capability to lap the Stuyvesant fields at Levin and Pukekohe but he was not so sure about the ultra-fast 2.13 mile aerodrome circuit here. TOUGH' After a moment's reflection he said: "Maybe I don't know. It looks as though it could be a tough race tomorrow. The Grand Prix cars did not out for qualifying trials until early in the afternoon but the general opinion in the pits seemed to be that to get a front row position for the rolling start a lap speed of 120mph would be needed. McRae was fastest qualifier last year with a time or basec -which represents 117.969 mph -and he considered he would probably be able to get down to 63sec today. That is an average of 121.714 mph.
