Australian drivers McCormack and Stewart profiled

Profiles of Australia's challenge in the 1974 Stuyvesant series: 35-year-old John McCormack, new Australian Gold Star champion by three points over Johnnie Walker, brings two Elfin Repcos (the MR5 and the new MR6 with a Repco-developed Leyland V8), and 6ft 4in Max Stewart, the 1971 Australian champion known as the jolly green giant, runs a red and white Lola T330 with a modified Chevrolet V8.

Facts

  • McCormack's Elfin MR6, new for 1974, used a Repco-developed Leyland V8, the engine of Leyland Australia's P76 saloon.
  • McCormack won the Australian Gold Star series for the first time in November 1973 by three points from Johnnie Walker.

Photos

  • Close work in mid-field at Levin: Reg Cook (Lola T330) holds a narrow lead over R. Booth (Begg FM1) and N. Doyle (Surtees).
  • Southland driver Allan McCully, now a member of the PDL Racing Team, surprised many when he took his McLean FJ5 into second place at Levin.
