Mystery split pin blamed for destruction of engine
Frank Matich and his four-man crew reached Christchurch for the 1972 Lady Wigram Trophy still baffled by the destruction of his Repco engine at Levin: a split pin chopped the motor nearly in half, though the engine has no split pins. It was the second engine he lost in New Zealand that season, after an earlier gasket failure. Matich said the car might lack power on the fast Wigram circuit.
