Australian Graham Withers powered his $10,000 Ampol GT dragster down the Wigram back straight in what was probably New Zealand's fastest standing quarter-mile, estimated at about 8.5sec and over 170 mph. No timing gear was set up and Withers was due to fly home for his father's funeral, so a timed run was unlikely. Aucklanders Brian Trigg and Dave McDougall also made runs.
