Racer is unfair in premier series

Describes the 1970 Lady Wigram Trophy as the third round of the seven-race Tasman Championship, the Southern Hemisphere's premier series, scored 9-6-4-3-2-1 for first to sixth. It recounts previous champions (Bruce McLaren 1964, Chris Amon 1969, otherwise UK drivers), the new Formula A-5000 cars and rolling starts, a new Mercury $1000 South Island saloon car series, and picks Graham McRae as the man to beat.

Facts

  • The 1970 Tasman Championship was a seven-race series with the Lady Wigram Trophy as its third round; points were 9, 6, 4, 3, 2 and 1 for the first six places.
  • The Tasman series was introduced in 1964 and won first by Bruce McLaren; Chris Amon in 1969 was the only other New Zealand champion up to 1970.
  • A new seven-race South Island saloon car championship, the Mercury $1000, was inaugurated at Wigram in 1970, open to 'anything goes' all-comers and NZ Saloon Car Championship cars with a 5.5 litre limit; other rounds were at Ruapuna, Levels and Teretonga.
  • The 1970 Wigram race was to use a rolling start for the first time.
