Supporting events should be exciting
Preview of the supporting races at the 14th International Lady Wigram Trophy meeting in January 1968. The all-comers saloon category has been replaced by Group 5 saloons (production-appearance cars, mechanically modified) forming the 1967-68 national saloon championship in four capacity classes. Andrew Buchanan's Chevrolet-V8 Elfin 400 sports car faces Geoff Mardon's Stanton-Corvette, and the 1.5-litre trophy heat includes leader Graeme Lawrence, Roly Levis and David Oxton.
Facts
- For 1968 the Wigram all-comers saloon category was dropped in favour of Group 5 saloons, in classes up to 1000cc, 1001-1300cc, 1301-2000cc and over 2000cc; the highest points scorer irrespective of class would be the 1967-68 national champion.
- In 1968 the first Lady Wigram Trophy heat was for Tasman cars and the second for New Zealand 1.5-litre cars, an 11-lap points-scoring heat in the National Formula series.
- Andrew Buchanan's Elfin 400 had beaten the Stanton-Corvette at Pukekohe earlier in January 1968.
