Tyre battle in racing series

As in the previous year, the Tasman series was a three-cornered tyre battle between Firestone, Goodyear and Dunlop, made more interesting by Firestone's new tyre developed with Colin Chapman specially for Jim Clark's Lotus-Climax V8. Clark narrowly failed to beat Stewart in the NZ Grand Prix at Pukekohe but set the fastest lap at 104.1 mph and won the Levin international, setting fastest lap just over 89 mph. A 400 pound prize awaited the first 100 mph lap at Wigram.

Lap times

  • Jim Clark (Lotus-Climax V8): 104.1 mph fastest race lap
  • Jim Clark (Lotus-Climax V8): 89 mph fastest race lap

Facts

  • Jim Clark won the 1967 Levin international and set the fastest lap in the 1967 NZ Grand Prix at 104.1 mph, narrowly beaten by Stewart.
  • The BRM drivers were thought to have a slight power advantage over Clark's Lotus in the 1967 Tasman series.
  • A side prize of 400 pounds was offered for the first 100 mph lap in the 1967 Lady Wigram Trophy race.

Racing Series AS was the case in the Tasman champion- ship series of motor races in New Zealand aged ears season, the bront bees en te drivers themselves, is between American and British tyre manufacturers. It is again a three-cornered ¡battle, the adversares being the American Firestone and Goodyear concerns and the famous British Dunlop firm. However, it has been made much more interesting this time simply because Firestone's bid for success is based on a unique venture. This company called in Colin Chapman, the chief of the British Lotus concern, to help design and develop a com pletely new racing tyre. As a result Chapman's driver, the former world champion Jim Clark, is using on his Lotus-Climax V8 this season a tyre which his been designed with his particular car very much in mind. Although Clark failed by the narrowest of margins to beat _No. 1 B.R.M. driver, Jackie Stewart, in the New Zealand Grand Prix at Pukezone, he did set the fastest lap at 104.1 miles an hour and last saturday went on to win the Levin international race and also make fastest lap at fractionally more than 89 miles an 'hour. Slight Edge Although no one is revealing power output figures, it is conceded that the general arivers, Stewart, and B.R.M. Attwood, have a slight advantage over Clark and his Lotus. Now the various teams are wondering whether this advantlage will be sufficient for the world champion, Jack Brabham, and his New Zealand 'team-mate, Denis Hulme, in their V8 Repco-Brabhams, and the B.R.M. team to head off Clark in the vital Lady Wigram Trophy race here on Saturday. Clark's 104.1 miles an hour fastest lap in the Grand Prix 01 l the revised and faster Pukekohe circuit is now being taken as a very fair indication! that the 100-miles-an-hour lap will come up in the trophy race on Saturday. • The first man to break the century barrier will receive a side prize of € 400. 16-1-67 13th INTERNATIONAL LADY WIGRAM TROPHY RACE R.N.Z.A.F.
