race report

Continuation of a race review of the 1966 Lady Wigram Trophy: the second heat was another BRM walkover with Stewart winning in 16:43.1; the 18-car field lined up on a dry, warm and humid track with Stewart, Attwood, Gardner and Clark on the front rows. Stewart did a first lap of 1:30 with Clark glued to him, then Gardner's brakes failed on lap 4 and he hit Clark at the hairpin; Stewart then lapped steadily about 1:27. Palmer took Martin on lap 27. Stewart's win was his first in NZ and BRM's hat-trick.

Stewart cut out the first lap in 1 min. 30 secs., but had Clark glued to his tall with a moderate gap to Attwood and Gardner and a longer one to Martin and the rest. Lawrence trickled into the pits for the first of a series of stops that finally ended with a broken clutch. While in Christchurch Jackie Stewart, Jim Palmer and Dickie Attwood found time to call on youngsters at Christchurch Public Hospital and just to make it a day for the kids Palmer took his Lotus along with him. In the second round Clark really applied the pressure and this brought Stewart and himself out about 100 yards clear of Attwood who had Gardner in his slipstream. The race had all the makings and although Clark looked very spectacular he was obviously right in the groove for the first time in the Tasman series. The third round was the second all over again and so they shot into the fourth. As they braked for the hairpin at the end of the straight, Clark appeared to beright with Stewart. Gardner, in Attwood's slipstream, braked at the 200 yard marker only to find no one at home. Instantaneously he moved out from behind Attwood, ranged alongside with just a little deceleration from the rear wheels which were locking up and looked as if he might make the escape road. However, Clark was still in his tur and the Brabham clouted the Lotus on the left side. Buth cars spun to the grass and Attwood somehow missed them tü automatically move to second spot but quite some distance behind Stewart because of the mix-up. From that moment the ing.
