BRM team romps home, sets record

Jackie Stewart and Dickie Attwood finished first and second in the 12th International Lady Wigram Trophy, both inside the previous year's record time, in front of about 20,000 spectators. The race lost interest when Clark and Gardner collided at the hairpin on lap four after Gardner's brakes failed. Stewart's 63:44.1 was 35.2 seconds inside Clark's 1965 record and his 1:25.0 lap was a second faster than the 1965 lap record; Palmer took third for the second year running after passing Martin on lap 27. The BRM pair shared the Tasman lead on 15 points each, Palmer 10, Hill and Martin 7, Clark 6.

Lap times

  • Jackie Stewart (BRM 1.9): 1:25.0 lap record
  • Jim Clark (Lotus-Climax 2.5): 1:25.9 lap record

Facts

  • Jackie Stewart won the 1966 Lady Wigram Trophy in 63:44.1, 35.2 seconds inside Clark's 1965 race record, at an average of about 94 mph.
  • Every BRM driver to appear in the 1966 NZ Tasman races won one race: Hill the NZ Grand Prix, Attwood Levin and Stewart Wigram.
  • Attwood scraped through the collision at the hairpin and inherited second place; Gardner's path to the escape road was blocked by Clark's car.
  • After Wigram, Stewart and Attwood shared the Tasman Championship lead on 15 points each; Palmer had 10 and Hill, Martin and Clark were next.
  • Stewart set a Wigram circuit speed record of just over 98 mph in the early practice (previous lap).
  • Gardner's brakes failed 200 yards from the hairpin on lap four, and the point of impact was just behind Clark's cockpit; neither driver was hurt.
