Special prize to first man to lap at 100

A 300-pound cheque from a Christchurch motor businessman is on offer to the first driver in the 1965 Lady Wigram Trophy race to lap at 100 mph or more, which needs a lap of 1:22.8 (4.1 seconds better than McLaren's 1964 time). In 1963 Brabham and Surtees clocked 1:16.6 in training (fractionally under 100 mph) on the shorter circuit; with the longer circuit and Loop lap speeds fell in 1964.

Lap times

  • Jack Brabham (Brabham-Climax 2.7 litre): 1:16.6 practice
  • John Surtees (Lola-Climax 2.7 litre): 1:16.6 practice
  • Jack Brabham (Brabham-Climax): 1:18.3 fastest race lap

Facts

  • The 100 mph lap prize at Wigram in 1965 was 300 pounds, requiring 1:22.8, 4.1 seconds faster than McLaren's 1964 race lap.
  • Tyre improvements were said to be worth up to 2 seconds a lap season to season, plus about 2 seconds from suspension and power gains.
