Wigram Trophy race has a wide open look

Peter Greenslade previews the 1965 Lady Wigram Trophy after the NZ Grand Prix at Pukekohe, won by Graham Hill (Scuderia Veloce Repco-Brabham-Climax); Jim Clark was eliminated in a shunt with McLaren on lap two, and McLaren wrecked his car in the heat and went out of Phil Hill's car with gearbox trouble. A 300-pound prize is offered to the first driver to average 100 mph in the race, needing a lap of 1:22.8.

Lap times

  • Denis Hulme (Repco-Brabham-Climax): 1:26.7 fastest race lap
  • Bruce McLaren (Cooper-Climax): 1:26.9 fastest race lap

Facts

  • In 1965 a Christchurch businessman offered a 300 pound side prize for the first driver to average 100 mph in the Lady Wigram Trophy race itself.
  • A lap of 1:22.8 was needed for a 100 mph average at Wigram in 1965, 3.9 seconds faster than Hulme's 1964 heat time of 1:26.7.
  • In the 1964 Lady Wigram Trophy Bruce McLaren's fastest lap of 1:26.9 (95.28 mph) was the race record.
  • Tyre improvements since 1964 were expected to give leading drivers an advantage of about 2 seconds a lap at Wigram.
