McLaren 3 points ahead of Hulme

Ahead of the Teretonga Park round of the Tasman Championship on 25 January 1964, Bruce McLaren led the eight-race series with 22 points from wins in the NZ Grand Prix and Lady Wigram Trophy and a third at Levin, three ahead of Denis Hulme with 19 (Levin win, second at NZ GP, third at Wigram). Points were 9, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1 and only seven drivers had scored.

Facts

  • After the 1964 Lady Wigram Trophy, McLaren led the Tasman Championship on 22 points and Hulme was on 19.
  • Tasman Championship points in 1964 were 9, 6, 4, 3, 2 and 1 for the first six places; drivers counted the NZ and Australian Grand Prix results plus their best two other races in each country.
  • A maximum of 27 points was possible in the New Zealand section; a win at Teretonga would have given McLaren the maximum and Hulme 24.

McLaren in the box seat

Columnist's view that McLaren, after his NZ Grand Prix and Lady Wigram Trophy double, was in the box seat for the Tasman Championship, with Hulme very much in the picture. He rates Hulme, given equal opportunity, ahead of boss Brabham six or seven times in ten, says the Wigram trophy race gave New Zealand motor racing a needed shot in the arm, and notes Brabham had two cars on the front row of the 1963 South African GP.

Facts

  • McLaren was in 1964 leader of the Cooper Grand Prix team and a test and development expert on the 500,000 dollar Ford GT car project.
  • The 1964 Lady Wigram Trophy duel saw the first three cars separated by no more than about 3 seconds for roughly half the distance.
  • Brabham announced that he and Dan Gurney would comprise the 1964 Repco-Brabham Grand Prix team, with Hulme getting an occasional drive.

Photos

  • Repco-Brabham Climax driver Denis Hulme, with 19 points in the Tasman Championship after third place in the Lady Wigram Trophy Race, was only three points behind leader Bruce McLaren.

Contestants must count points won in the New Zealand and Australian Grand Prix : races and their best points in any two of the other three races held in each country. Points are awarded on the basis of 9, 6, 4, 3, 2 and 1 for the six major places. Good Chance The way things are shaping would indicate that McLaren has a very good chance of pulling off the title. But he will not have things all his own way for the other leading New Zealand international driver, Denis Hulme, is very much in the picture with a total of 19 points gained from a Levin win, a second in the New Zealand Grand Prix and & third in the Lady Wigram Trophy. Seven So Far So far only seven drivers have scored points in the series. The others are McLaren's American teammate, Timmy Mayer (2.5 Cooper-Climax), Tasmanian John Youl (2.5 Cooper-Climax), Jack Brabham, Hulme's team leader, with Repco-Brabham-Climax, and the resident New Zealand drivers, Jimmy Palmer (2.5 Cooper-Climax) and Tony Shelly (2.5 Lotus- Climax). MeLaren drove the race of his life in his light-weight Cooper Climax last Saturday, staving off the Repco- Brabham-Climaxes of Jack Brabham and Denis Hulme with only seconds to spare. That trophy race win brought McLaren's Tasman Championship points total to 22, and to improve on his score he had to place better than third in the final New Zealand round at Teretonga Park, Invercargill, today. But the great thing about this Tasman Championship is that Hulme is also right in the middle of the picture and he could easily pull it off too. What a harvest festival these two young New Zealanders are having this season! And it is not just a question of luck. No Sign But when it was all over and he had won by 8sec from Brabham, he displayed no sign of the mental stress he must have undergone and, in my book, with the revolutionary new Formula I Cooper he will have for the world title series, he must be counted a major contender. In the South African Grand Prix at the end of 1963 Brabham had the satisfaction of placing two of his cars on the front row of the starting grid, a tremendous achievement for a man who has been a racing car constructor for the • brief span of two years.
