tenth international Lady
Wigram motor race
trophy meeting.
The spectators began
arriving long before the
first beat of the trophy
race, and the public parking area was a sea of cars
Dy 9 a.m.
Officials expected more
than 20,000 by the time
the main race started.
Conditions orerhead
were good, but late in the
morning a strong easterly blew up to keep
temperatures nown.

"HE 2.5 litre Repco-Brabham-Climaxes of the former world
champion, Jack Brabham, and his husky young Te Puke team
mate, Denis Hulme, dominated the two preliminary 25.3 mile heats
for the international Lady Wigram Trophy at Wigram to-day.
What showed promise of
being a record crowd saw
Hulme win the first heat
from end to end in 16min
22.6sec. and take fastest lap
in Imin 26.7sec.
In the second heat there
was a tremendous tussie
between Brabham and the
Aucklander Bruce McLaren
(2.5 litre Cooper-Climax).
McLaren led from the
second lap to the end of
the fifth, then Brabham
went to the front and
held a slender lead to
the end.
McLaren • actually passed
Brabham less than half a
mile from home, but Brabham took the Aucklander
again to win the race in
16min 12.5sec., by half a
second from McLaren.

Hit Post
Much of the interest
went out of the first heat
when Tim Haver, NIc.
Laren's young American
team mate. spun off the
track in the first lap, at
the entrance to the long
back straight.
The Cooper-Climax travelled more than 100 yards
across the grass, and struck
a post.
The steering and
front suspension were
slightly damaged, and
Mayer, right out of the
contest, resumed for
another lap before retixing.
His mechanics immed.
iately set to work to repair the damage in readiness for the main race.
With Mayer out of the
way, Hulme had a clear

Lap Behind
The Putaruru driver Roly
evis was well and truly
ut of the contest in his
.65 litre Lotus-Ford, and
inished lap behind the
thers.
There was one other re
tirement in this neat-that
of Ken Sager-whose Lotus
Ford went out with gearbox trouble, after one lap.
The second heat was
much more exciting.
The Tasmanian John
Youl 12.5 litre Cooper-Climax) got a fiver of a start
and at the end of the first
lap led McLaren and Brabham
However, MeLaren made
his move in the second lap,
with Branham in close attendance.
Youl dropped back to
third place but at the end
of four laps there was only
four seconds between the
three, who had opened up
a considerable gap to Andrew Buchanan 1.6 litre
Brabham-Ford) and David
Young (1.5 litre Cooper-
Ford) and Rex Flowers
(1.5 litre Lotus-Ford).
High Speed
Brabham really applied
the pressure and he and
McLaren were hitting 150
miles an hour on the back
straight.
It was at this stage that
the Australian went to
the front, but there was
really nothing in it as Mc-
Laren was never more than
two car-lengths behind him.
Toal could not maintain the searing pace
and drifted back a bit,
but was well clear of
Buchanan, Young, and
Flowers, who were travelling in close company.
Right to the end the issue
was in doubt.
McLaren made several
attempts, and finally did
manage to slip by, just
(past the hair-pin on the
(final round, but Brabham
took him again less than al
quarter of a mile from:
home, and won by the nar-
¡rowest of margins.
Following McLaren were

mesuts.
