Hulme pleased with loop at Wigram but McLaren not
Drivers' views of the new 2.3-mile circuit with a loop beyond the control tower bend were mixed at the first Lady Wigram training session on the Friday: Denis Hulme liked it, Bruce McLaren felt it slowed him considerably, while spectators were enthusiastic. Overseas drivers circulated at about 92 mph; a year earlier McLaren had lapped the old 2.116-mile circuit at just under 100 mph. Chris Amon broke a bottom gear selector early on.
Lap times
- Bruce McLaren (Cooper-Climax 2.7 litre): just under 100 mph practice
- Bruce McLaren / Tim Mayer / Jack Brabham / Denis Hulme: about 92 mph practice
Facts
- The 1964 Wigram circuit with its new loop beyond the control tower bend was 2.3 miles long.
- In 1963 practice McLaren lapped the old circuit at fractionally less than 100 mph; the fastest 1964 lap was expected to be a few mph slower.
- Hulme thought the slow loop section suited his Repco-Brabham-Climax; cars were becoming airborne approaching the loop.
- In 1964 McLaren and Mayer raced as the official Cooper works team; Brabham's car had been repaired after his crash in the NZ Grand Prix at Pukekohe the previous Saturday.
- A grandstand opposite the pits was erected for the 1964 meeting; crowds watched the Friday trials in pleasant conditions.
