Makes, not drivers, may decide race

The 100-mile Lady Wigram Trophy may become a battle between makes rather than individual drivers: Brabham's team (Hulme and Brabham in Repco-Brabham-Climaxes) against McLaren's two-car Cooper team (McLaren and Mayer). Hulme won the Vic Hudson Memorial at Levin and shared a lap record at Pukekohe; John Youl is tipped as dark horse. A Stop Press carries practice times.

Lap times

  • Denis Hulme (Repco-Brabham-Climax): 1:27.7 practice
  • Jack Brabham (Repco-Brabham-Climax): 1:29 practice
  • Tim Mayer (Cooper-Climax): 1:29.2 practice
  • Bruce McLaren (Cooper-Climax): 1:29.4 practice
  • Jim Palmer (Cooper-Climax): 1:31 practice
  • Chris Amon (Lola-Climax): 1:34.4 practice

Facts

  • Denis Hulme won the Vic Hudson Memorial Trophy at Levin on 4 January 1964 by a big margin and set a new lap record.
  • At the 1964 NZ Grand Prix at Pukekohe Brabham crashed, Hulme finished second and shared a new lap record with Frank Matich.
  • McLaren won the 1964 NZ Grand Prix with Tim Mayer third.
  • Jack Brabham arrived in Christchurch last of the overseas drivers because he supervised repairs in Auckland.
