Formula One Brabham: fastest cars yet

Preview of the fastest field yet assembled for a Lady Wigram Trophy meeting. McLaren's new low-line, extra-light semi-monocoque Tasman Cooper may be the forerunner of the 1964 Formula One Cooper-Climax; the main threat is the Repco-Brabham-Climax cars of Hulme and Brabham, plus John Youl's twin-ignition Cooper which averaged 81 mph winning the Hordern Trophy at Warwick Farm. Notes on Palmer, Shelly, Buchanan, Boyd, Young, Amon, Flowers and Levis follow.

Facts

  • John Youl won the Hordern Trophy at Warwick Farm in January 1964, recognised as the most important Australian race outside the Grand Prix; his Cooper averaged 81 mph.
  • Jimmy Boyd's Valour (Cosworth-Ford powered Formula Junior) was described in 1964 as New Zealand's first production racing car.
  • McLaren's 1964 Tasman Cooper was semi-monocoque, with oil and water carried in the chassis tubes to save weight.
