100 miles of speed and thrills at Wigram: tenth Trophy race will be very close

Preview of the tenth Lady Wigram Trophy on 18 January 1964, tipped to be the closest and most exciting yet, with at least five of fifteen likely drivers evenly matched under the 2.5-litre Tasman Formula. Favourites are Jack Brabham and Denis Hulme (Brabham-Climaxes), Bruce McLaren and Tim Mayer (Cooper-Climaxes), with John Youl and Chris Amon capable of challenging. The circuit has been extended from 2.116 to 2.3 miles by a loop beyond Control Tower Bend and a re-aligned Hangar Bend, and the Trophy race cut to 100 miles.

Facts

  • The 1964 Lady Wigram Trophy was run over 100 miles under the Tasman Formula (2.5-litre) with two 25-mile preliminary heats at the start of the day.
  • The Wigram circuit was extended from 2.116 miles to 2.3 miles for 1964 by realigning the Hangar Bend, eliminating the chicane and adding a loop beyond Control Tower Bend, turning it from a power course into a drivers' course.
  • Shortening the race by 50 miles to 100 miles in 1964 meant drivers could no longer hold back hoping leaders' cars would break; faster, closer racing was expected.
  • The 1964 Wigram meeting had eleven events, with the Trophy race, MRC championship and saloon races each run as heats and a final, plus a 13-mile invitation race for the ten fastest cars.
  • Tasman Cup series of eight races in New Zealand and Australia in January and February 1964 was contested by the new 2.5-litre cars.
  • Wigram patrons in 1964 saw a circuit plan marking the Hairpin, Bomb-Bay Bend, Hangar Bend, Back Straight and Vickerys Road.

On paper the new circuit looks slower, but the new lightweight Tasman Formula cars and the re duction of the race length by 50 down to 100 miles could produce some surprising lap times. Re-arrangement of the circuit opens up a new and most interesting vantage point for Wigram pations.
